The USA Network original series The Dead Zone is based on characters from the Stephen King novel, which has also previously been adapted as a feature film.
The novel The Dead Zone was first released in hardcover by Viking Penguin in July, 1979. The book became a #1 bestseller, and has been published in several editions since. According to Amazon.com, when asked in 1983 which of his novels so far was "the best," Stephen King answered, "The one that I think works the best is The Dead Zone. It's the one that (has) the most story."

The Dead Zone was adapted into a feature film by Paramount Pictures and released in the United States on October 21, 1983. The film stars Christopher Walken as "Johnny Smith," Brooke Adams as "Sarah," Tom Skerritt as "Sheriff Bannerman," and Martin Sheen as "Greg Stillson." Directed by David Cronenberg, the movie is generally considered to be one of the best movie adaptations of a Steven King novel, and is currently available on both VHS and DVD.
