FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2006

Lauren, the newest 4400 Fan of the Week, wants the ability to let people live out their true calling, thus revealing their purpose in life. Here is her entry:

Lauren M.

My name is Lauren and I'm a 16-year-old high school junior from New Jersey. I like to think of myself as something of a TV connoisseur; sure, I'll gladly sit in front of the tube all day, but I'm very particular about the shows that I watch. I have an appreciation for quality television, and The 4400 epitomizes all that I value in a great show: it never stops getting better.

I'm proud to say that I've been a fan since the very beginning. As I watched those first five episodes back in 2004, I prayed that USA would be astute enough to pick up for a second season what was quickly becoming the smartest show I had ever seen. To this day, The 4400 is one of the only things that gets me through the ghastly summer TV lineup. The writing is brilliant, the acting is phenomenal, and the story progression is mind-blowing. I am, plain and simple, an addict.

One of my favorite things about The 4400 is that the writers have a knack for recognizing the moment when you’d least expect to be thrown for a loop…and choosing precisely that moment to throw you. I have never reacted so strongly to an episode of television as I did to the last two minutes of the second season finale, "Mommy’s Bosses." When I saw Jordan Collier standing on that beach, I almost had a stroke. Hats off to the writers for coming up with plot twists shocking enough to make me literally jump off my couch and scream.

Of all the powers I’ve seen on The 4400, Alana's is the one I think I would like to have more than any other. If I could choose an ability for myself, it would be a lot like Alana's – but rather than taking people on “mind vacations” as she does, I would instead allow them to live out in an alternate reality their "true calling." I feel like I could liberate a lot of people by letting them see firsthand what they are destined to do with their time here on earth. The 4400 all know that they are on this planet for a reason; it would be so rewarding to help more people realize that every life has a purpose.
