FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2006
Sebastien, the newest 4400 Fan of the Week, wants to be able to control the weather... but he realizes that there are drawbacks to such a powerful ability. Here is his entry:
Hey there. My name is Sebastien. I love this show. I had just barely started watching it when I caught the 4400 marathon before the third season finale. I couldn't stop watching! This is a great sci-fi show, something that's been missing on TV for a while. The way the show brings everything down to earth with ethical dilemmas and human feelings keeps it from being too fantastical and unrealistic.
If I were one of the 4400, I'd like to develop the power to control the weather. Benefits would include never being too hot or too cold, great offensive and defensive capabilities, using the wind to fly, the ability to end droughts and stop storms, and an innate knowledge of the atmosphere, which could provide great insight to the scientific community. Maybe it could even be used to reverse some of the effects of pollution.
But some of these advantages might be drawbacks too. Resources are finite, so would using rain to end a drought somewhere cause one elsewhere? If I didn't arrive in time to stop a hurricane or tornado or forest fire, two things would probably happen: I'd feel guilty for the rest of my life and there would be people who would blame me. Which poses the question: would trying to stop natural disasters be playing God?
Also, if the ability was affected by my emotions, I'd probably have to try to stay calm all the time to avoid creating disasters. Seeing the kinds of situations the 4400 get into, that might be pretty hard.
Overall I think the power would be useful in grand, selfless gestures, but fun too when used for pranks and general self-gratification.
Think you deserve the honor of "The 4400 Fan of the Week"?
