FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 10, 2006

The latest 4400 Fan of the Week, Melissa, is both a science fiction fan and a historian. The 4400 blends her two interests so well that she's gained new insights into the future of mankind.  Her desired power is the ability to manipulate emotions... but would she use it for good or evil? We'd probably feel good about her decision either way! Here is her entry...

Melissa B.
Greetings 4400-ites! I may be relatively new to the 4400 phenomenon, but I have to say – this show is a step FAR above the others on the menu of Scifi shows today.

I came into the show at the beginning of season 2 – as always with new Scifi shows – looking for something fresh and different. I have been a SciFi aficionado most of my life, so the premise of The 4400 caught my eye in a new way. The story arches, characters and plots are inventive, mysterious and all-together captivating. The casting has been superb, as all the actors have given their characters a depth that pulls the viewers in and never lets go!

With all the knock-offs, spin-offs, and frankly…some turn-offs in shows today, The 4400 brought an creative new flair to the Scifi genre, its mystery, drama and sometimes terrifying plots making for episodes that I come away from with some pretty profound thoughts about humanity’s future.

As a historian, I can see that where we are going depends on where we’ve been – and The 4400 makes that fact even more frighteningly evident as they blur the lines of past, present and future.

If I were to have a power – I suppose I would choose the power to sense and manipulate emotions. This ability would allow me to manipulate a person’s emotions however I saw fit – bringing them intense euphoria, or paralyzing fear.

If one controls the emotions of others, one could carry out plans of rebellion or benevolent change – and the masses would feel pretty darn good about it…if I wished! Use this power for good or evil? Who knows! Depends on which side of the “fight the future” fence this 4400 happened to be on!
