DIVE RIGHT IN
Throughout the season, Music Producer Elliot Lurie will be taking us through the process by which each episode's music is chosen. This week's episode was a fun challenge. The script didn't indicate a song playing over the ending, but once I saw the rough cut, I felt the right song could really add.
I especially liked the notion of tying together the two scenes: Diana injecting Kevin with promicin, and Shawn and Isabelle.
Shawn and Isabelle is tricky. It's sexy, but not romantic. Shawn is acting against his better judgment and there's an element of danger in the scene.
I had heard an uptempo song by People In Planes on the radio and really liked it. So when their new album came in, I listened to the whole thing. When I heard "Falling By The Wayside", with the lyric "dive right in" and "losing control", I thought it might work over Shawn and Isabelle.
When I put it up to the picture, I really liked the mood of it and the lyrics seemed to be speaking exactly from Shawn's point of view. I was happy with it and shipped it off to the producers.
I got a very positive reaction along with a great suggestion from Bruce Miller and Ira Steven Behr. They asked if I could move the music so "dive right in" landed right on the kiss.
Off to my trusty computer to make the change, and I got lucky. Not only did their idea work great, but also, sliding the music created a natural space for Isabelle's quiet line, "It's on my list."
Sometimes the gods smile.
BTW, if you thought Isabelle driving Shawn's sports car was fun, you should have seen it with "Dance, Dance" by Fall Out Boy blaring away. We tried it, but it was voted down.
