THE CONTESTANTS REALLY SEEM TO TAKE THE JUDGES' COMMENTS TO HEART. IF YOU WERE COMPETING, WOULD YOUR RESPONSE BE THE SAME OR WOULD YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT STRATEGY?

Well, the hard thing about being an artist is that you have to foster a fierce and stubborn belief in yourself, and balance that with the natural insecurities that are innate in every artist.

You have to be open to criticism, but weigh it against your conscience ... because you want to grow, but not in a way that compromises who you are and what you stand for.

For me, I decided I wanted to be a singer/songwriter who cared about the craft more than I cared about fame, so I took advice within that context. I turned down a lot of advice that may have helped me have more hits or bigger hits, if it was in a way that seemed cheesy to me.

Knowing who you are and what your goals are is key to filtering through the millions of opinions you receive every day.
