FOR THE WEEK OF August 8, 2008

Hi, my name is Amy and I am probably an unusual Monk fan because ordinarily I don't watch television. I read.

Several years ago someone said to me "You would really like the show Monk." I smiled and didn't pay any attention, thinking it was probably about a monastery. Within a week, someone else said "You would really like the TV show Monk." I asked what it was and they said it was about an OCD detective. I love mysteries and I'm interested in the human mind so the following Friday night, I turned the TV on. It was Natalie's first episode. I was hooked from then on.

That summer I bought the first three seasons on DVD. It's still the only TV show I watch and a few weeks ago I was thrilled to discover the books. I've only read two - "Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants" and "Mr. Monk goes to Germany." I will read the other three as soon as I can find them.

I think one reason I love Monk so much is that he makes me feel normal. I am slightly claustrophobic, and slightly obsessive about things matching, but next to Monk, I'm free as the wind. And of course I love his love for Trudy.

I love Adrian, Natalie, Leland, and Randy, and Dr. Kroger. I love Sharona too but don't know her as well. However I thought the book "Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants" was awesome and it's a shame it can't be a TV episode.

My favorite episode is "Monk and the Kid." It made me cry. It also made me cry when at the end of this season's first episode I found out that Dr. Kroger had not just moved on to another show. I was glad to read that Stanley Kamel was "an extremely kind man." He seemed like that to me. The new man is great though - brilliant casting.

My husband, who watches TV all the time, didn't like the program for several years but last month he announced to me. "Okay, I'm hooked." He became paralyzed in January and now he watches Monk re-runs every morning from 9 to 10 a.m.

I greatly appreciate the producers, writers, and actors of Monk. It is a funny, healthy, clever, heartwarming series and I love it!
