FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 5, 2007
Our latest Monk Fan of the Week, Leeandy, has a fear of germs that's equal to Monk's! Here is her entry...
I'm the "Monk-ey girl!" as my friends humbly refer to me as. I'm a college student at Penn State University, and everyone knows why I stay very much away from the Microbiology labs. I have shared Monk's number one phobia -- Misophobia; fear of germs -- as my own number one phobia since I was 8 years old. My habits with germs are very much like that of Monk's.
I didn't do too well being a waitress at a restaurant. I was "too clean" and fussy. As if that's a bad thing, sheesh. I stopped eating all meats when I was 11. That's when I found out they carry germs that can make you sick, seeing my dad after he had eaten a spoiled Reuben sandwich. Ew!
I compulsively check dates and ingredients on food, I will NOT eat out -- for example, I was a bridesmaid recently. Yeah, it was quite embarrassing to sit with the bridal party on display when it was time to eat at the reception and I sat there with nothing on my plate. I also felt compelled to inspect everyone's eating utensils as well.
But what's most obvious about my misophobia is the compulsive hand washing. Man, my hands are redder than a cherry pie!
I also have a phobia of tornadoes, Labrador Retrievers, bumblebees, eating alone and vomiting. Not to mention my other little obsessive-compulsive quirks. Though my germaphobia and dates on food issue stands out the most.
I did pull a definite Monk when I grabbed a lot of expired food from shelves that I got sick and tired of seeing every time I visited the store, and brought them up to the cashier so she could throw them away. Of course, I got the "Are you a freak?" look. My best friend told me he's going to make a cartoon of us and our group of friends, and of course my character is "The Germaphobe."
My favorite Monk episode is definitely when Monk shook the hand of a pseudo leper and washed said hand for 9 hours! Yep, that's the Monk in me as well!
