FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 19, 2007

Our latest Monk Fan of the Week, John, is a teacher whose students actually refer to him as "Monk"! Here is his entry...

John L.

I believe that I should be the Monk Fan of the Week because many of my qualities match those of Monk. I'm a teacher, and my middle school students actually refer to me as Monk.

For example, I have some magnets on my blackboard from various places I've visited, and it is extremely important to me that they all be perfectly straight and evenly aligned. Once in a while, my students will move the magnets to see if I notice. I always do.

I also have a dust pan and little brush for when they track dirt into the classroom (even though I DO ask them to wipe their feet before they walk in). In my desk drawer, I have hand wipes. In my closet, I have Windex, paper towels, a Swiffer duster, Lysol, and Febreze Air Freshener.

Most Wednesdays, our students get out of school an hour early so that teachers can have extra time to plan lessons and grade papers. I, however, clean my classroom during that time. The teacher in the room next to me asks me if I'd go in and clean his room, too, but I really prefer concentrating on the cleanliness of my room first.

In all honesty, it would be quite difficult to choose my favorite Monk episode, but I really enjoyed Mr. Monk Stays in Bed. Ataxophobia, the fear of things being disorderly or untidy, would be one of my favorite of Monk's plethora of phobias.

My wife and I watch together every Friday (and the marathons, of course), and she laughs at so many of the similarities between Monk and me. There are a lot of funny lines, many of which I share with my students the following Monday in school. In some ways, I am perhaps Monk-ish today than I was prior to the show's premiere.

I think my wife and students would all agree that I am worthy of the Monk Fan of the Week award. Thank you for your consideration.
