FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 11, 2006

Our latest Monk Fan of the Week, Juliet, is a Sherlock Holmes junkie who has kept Monk with her throughout her life. Here is her entry...

Juliet L.

I've been a Monk fan since before the show started. Weeks ahead of the series premiere, I saw it advertised in a magazine and knew I had to watch.  Monk has never disappointed me since. It's like no other show on television, a perfect balance of serious character development and smart comedy.

Like many other fans, I can recognize my own compulsive behavior in Monk's, and I love the old-fashioned mysteries that bring to mind my old favorites Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. Indeed, as a Sherlock Holmes junkie, I was delighted with the appearance of Ambrose Monk, every bit as solitary and brilliant as Holmes' brother Mycroft.

However, I think Adrian Monk's real appeal is in the vulnerability, uncertainty, and quirkiness that allow us to identify with him in spite of his superior deductive skills. Unlike a Holmes or a Poirot, he is not a superman; the flaws in his nature, which make him the detective he is, also cripple him in his social and professional life.  What's not to love?

My favorite episode of all time is definitely "Mr. Monk Goes To the Theater"-- I can't get enough of the scene in which Monk "discovers" his acting skills as a swaggering Southerner.  Indeed, I'm delighted by any episode that reveals new sides of familiar figures; Stottlemeyer's singing in "Mr. Monk Goes to Vegas", and his beautiful duet with Randy in "Mr. Monk and the Secret Santa", spring to mind.

I don't watch much television, but Monk has become a staple and has followed me from high school through college, through six months working in Panama, and on to jobs as a biologist across the country.  I am a huge fan of the show and the cast, and am thrilled to have Adrian Monk along as a constant in my disorganized life.  Keep up the great work!
