FAN OF THE WEEK

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 31, 2006

Our latest Monk Fan of the Week, Diana, identifies with Monk as she considers herself to be an "odd duck", surrounded by people with a Stottlemeyer-like opinion of her quirks. Her favorite episode is "Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever". You can find Diana on the Monk message board as "spinner".  Here is her entry:

Diana T.

Hello. My name is Diana, and from the very first commercials for a new detective show I was intrigued as to the difference from any other show. Every episode in every season since then I have watched with enthusiasm and never found a time when the show has disappointed me. The portrayal of a man dealing with such difficulties and still managing to contribute as he has done is both endearing and encouraging. It seems we all have our mental and emotional difficulties to deal with in one form or another in varying degrees. The postive portrayal of this struggle in this program would seem most welcome to others as it is to me.

I identify with the Monk character quite a lot as I always felt myself to be somewhat of an "odd duck". Monk's struggle with self-acceptance is not a lot different from my own. His brilliance as a detective admittedly outshines me as a thinker. I find more to identify with him in the cleanliness and orderliness compulsions.

My brothers don't get my concern over germs and spiders very well; neither does my husband for that matter. They all have sort of a "Stottlemeyer perspective" on my quirks. I am pleased that a show like this is on the air to help make life easier for some. I think others watch and understand better the struggles which some individuals have to deal with in their lives.

I hope the show continues with its level of success so we can look forward to seeing a lot more of Mr. Monk in the future. My favorite episode is: Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever. The way the character is progressing is always interesting to me as I wonder how his life will continue to change in the series. A certain charm always shines through all the annoyances of his quirks. I always enjoy telling others about the show! Most times I find they are already watching Monk so we have a lot to talk about.
