FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 10, 2006
The second Monk Fan of the Week, Julie, identifies with Monk because she too suffers from OCD. She even uses Monk as an example so that others can better understand her condition, and takes comfort in Monk's ability to function with the disorder. She chose "Mr. Monk and The Astronaut" as her favorite episode, thanks to its difficult mystery. And for her favorite Monk phobia she picked one that seems to be very popular among Fan of the Week hopefuls... rodeos! Here is Julie's entry:
Hi! My name is Julie and I am an avid fan of MONK! My husband and I enjoy watching the show together and we always have a great laugh since I too have OCD, Anxiety Disorder and am Agoraphobic.
It is great to see Tony Shaloub using his amazing talent to portray yet another unusual character. I think he can play any character thrown his way and do it so convincingly. He is a great acting talent who will have a long and successful career. He is just so much fun to watch in MONK as he lets his character grow and expand so you always have something more to look for in the show.
It is extremely difficult to pick just one favorite episode. They are all very entertaining and fun. I normally do not watch detective shows or much TV, but MONK is special and it is something I can painfully understand and connect to the character with.
I have many phobias. Sometimes I watch the show and cringe when Monk has to touch something like a door in public. I am fortunate that since I have been married to a wonderfully understanding husband, that for 5 years of marriage now I have not had to open any doors at all. I love the show because it is the first time on TV that anyone has portrayed a sufferer of OCD, and even when the disorder is at its worst, he can function and solve the crimes and that gives me hope too.
Monk is a comfort for me and the writers do an excellent job showing what life is like for people with OCD. Now if someone asks me what OCD is and how it affects me, I tell them to watch MONK.
I guess my favorite episode is the one where Monk meets the Astronaut that murdered his ex-girlfriend while he was in outer space with an iron-clad alibi. I tried to sleuth it, but failed miserably.
My favorite Monk phobia? Rodeos! That one just cracks me up!
I would like to thank Mr. Shaloub for his great work, not just in the entetainment field, but in helping people like me feel better about ourselves.
